Mill of Kintail
The Mill of Kintail Conservation Area is a natural heritage site that showcases cultural and natural history within 154 acres in the Ottawa Valley. The R. Tait McKenzie Memorial Museum pays tribute to the life and times of Dr. McKenzie, a native of the area. McKenzie was a respected physician and physical educator who led a life rich in art and philosophy. McKenzie used his artistic talent to illustrate the human form and function in sport. His health and well-being philosophy is often tied to a medal he sculpted for the 1912 Olympic Games art competition, “The Joy of Effort”. This maxim is used today to describe the satisfaction gained from working towards individual goals in life and health.

The conservation area also provides a brilliant natural backdrop to the Mississippi Valley Conservation education program. Within the 154 acres, students encounter the Indian River, mature forest and open fields. The comprehensive education program explores many aspects of the environment from stream studies to soil profiling and wildlife habitat. The programs are curriculum based to meet the needs of elementary students from kindergarten to Grade 8 with an emphasis on water, conservation and stewardship.

Come for the day to hike, ski or snowshoe our extensive network of trails through the fields and forest of the Conservation Area. The fitness trail, a Joy of Effort-inspired fitness challenge, will test your physical abilities at eight different activity stations. Pack a lunch and picnic under the shade of an apple tree.

Cross country skiers and snowshoers enjoy the crisp winter air and spectacular sights along the designated trails.

In 2009, Ontario Power Generation donated $1000 toward interpretive signage to enhance the trail network for visitors.
