Aquatic Species at Risk monitoring in southeastern Ontario |
October 8, 2010—Five southeastern region conservation authorities (CAs)—South Nation, Rideau Valley, Mississippi Valley, Cataraqui, and Quinte—are working in partnership with the City of Ottawa, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of the Environment to inventory and monitor aquatic Species at Risk (SAR) in their respective watersheds.
Five aquatic SARs, the Eastern Pondmussel, Rainbow Mussel, Bridle Shiner, Pugnose Shiner, and Rapids Clubtail, are being studied over the next year. These species are essential for a healthy watershed providing food for larger animals and acting as water quality indicators. This study will determine where the species are succeeding and where populations have declined in each watershed. The findings will help promote awareness of aquatic SAR habitat and its preservation throughout the southeastern Ontario region.
Stream surveys will be conducted by CA staff using guidelines established by the Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol (OSAP) and the Ontario Benthos Bio-monitoring Network (OBBN). Water quality parameters, including pH and alkalinity levels, total phosphorous, nitrates, and metals will also be tested in conjunction with the SAR inventory. A detailed habitat description and threats inventory will also be provided for all inventory sites.
Once the data is collected and analyzed landowners along the monitored water bodies will receive a summary report of the findings.
