Watershed Conditions Bulletin April 30, 2010
This is a water levels conditions bulletin for the Mississippi Valley watershed.

Water levels on the Mississippi River system are lower than normal for this time of year. Most lakes are 10 to 30 cm below the normal spring levels and flows in the major tributaries of the Mississippi River are less than 50 percent of normal spring levels.

This is a result of below average precipitation through the winter and early spring.  In years with similar spring conditions, late season rains have usually been sufficient to bring levels and flows in the lakes and rivers to near normal conditions for the summer.  However, without significant rain occurring over the next three weeks it is unlikely that water levels will increase enough to reach summer target levels by the long weekend in May.

This will result in lower water levels throughout the watershed making boating and any other water related activities more hazardous as shoals that would not normally be a threat may be.  Residents are advised to use caution when venturing out on any waterbody this spring and summer.

MVC will continue to monitor water levels and provide updates as forecasts and conditions change. Visit www.mvc.on.ca and click on “Water Level Advisor" for daily updates on many lake water levels and river flows in the watershed.
