Watershed Conditions Bulletin January 21, 2008 |
|
This bulletin ends the flood watch for the Mississippi Valley watershed.
Water levels across most of the watershed have peaked and are slowly receding. With the return of temperatures to normal conditions, water levels have decreased in all smaller creeks and rivers. Water levels and flows are expected to remain higher than normal on the Mississippi River for at least the next two weeks as runoff from the western portion of the watershed makes its way through the lower river system. As such, all lakes and frozen sections of the river remain extremely dangerous. Swift currents and diminishing water levels may result in unstable ice conditions. Residents are urged to stay off ice covered waterways.
MVC’s flood forecasting and warning program is responsible for advising watershed municipalities and residents of potential flood risks. We are constantly monitoring weather conditions, water levels and river flows in an effort to keep residents abreast of current conditions. In instances of a flood, municipal and provincial emergency response personnel are warned and continuously advised of the severity and duration of the event.
