| Watershed Conditions Bulletin January 4, 2008 |
|
Based on current snow conditions, along with a five-day forecast for increased temperatures and rainfall, Mississippi Valley Conservation is extending its Watershed Conditions Bulletin.
As a result of the significant amount of fresh snow that has fallen since December’s rainfall, the snowpack has capacity to absorb and freeze a large portion of the expected precipitation. General flooding is not expected at this time however runoff amounts may reach equivalent amounts necessary to flood roadside ditches and contribute to higher conditions in area creeks and streams. Watershed residents in low-lying areas that historically receive some flooding are advised to: • Ensure sump pumps are in good working order • Maintain clear culverts and drains • Monitor local water levels in their area We would also recommend parents remind their children about the dangers of cold water and hypothermia. Water temperatures are getting close to freezing and all water courses pose a considerable threat to children. There is not enough ice on any watercourse or lake to safely venture out on it. |
