WATERSHED WATCH CANONTO LAKE LOCATION: Canonto Lake is located beside the town of Canonto and northeast of Ompah, a small town on Highway # 509. SIZE / DEPTH: Perimeter - 17.4 kilometres Surface Area - 221.0 hectares Mean Depth - 3.8 metres Maximum Depth - 21.4 metres QUALITY: In general the water quality in Canonto Lake is good. The Provincial Water Quality Objective for Total Phosphorus for Canonto Lake is 20 micrograms per litre. The average calculated from the total phosphorus results for 2000 for the euphotic zone (penetration of light) was 5.7 micrograms per litre indicating an unenriched or Oligotrophic lake. Chlorophyll a is a measure of the algal density in the lake. The average chlorophyll a densities for 2000 was 0.68 micrograms per litre, indicating a low algal density for Canonto Lake in 2000. SURROUNDING LAND: Permanent Residence - 6 (as of 1998) Seasonal Residence - 39 (as of 1998) ACCESS: Marine access is available on the northeast shore of the lake.
