WATERSHED WATCH CROTCH LAKE LOCATION: Crotch Lake is located north of Highway # 7 and west of Highway # 509. It can be reached either from Highway # 509 or from the village of Ompah via secondary roads. SIZE / DEPTH: Length - 4.8 kilometres Width - 1.3 kilometres Surface Area - 3103 acres Perimeter - 42.7 kilometres Maximum Depth - 31.1 metres Mean Depth - 8.4 metres QUALITY: In general the water quality in Crotch Lake is very good. The average clarity depth was 4.5 metres indicating Crotch Lake as a moderately enriched (some nutrients) or mesotrophic lake. The Provincial Water Quality Objective for Total Phosphorus for Crotch Lake is 20 micrograms per litre The average calculated from the total phosphorus results for 2000 for the euphotic zone (penetration of light) was 6.6. micrograms per litre and for the sample taken one metre of the bottom was 9.2 micrograms per litre, indicating an unenriched (few nutrients) or oligiotrophic lake. Chlorophyll a is a measure of the algal density in the lake. The average chlorophyll a densities for 2000 was 1.68 micrograms per litre indicating a low algal density for Crotch Lake in 2000.
